The term "artifact" signifies a product of art, or industry, rather than a natural object. In his famous work "Le Hasard et La Nécessité", (Chance & Necessity) Jacques Monod writes: "The distinction between artificial and natural objects appears immediate and unambiguous to us. Rocks, mountains, rivers or clouds are natural objects; a knife, a handkerchief, a car, are artificial objects, artifacts."
ARTIFACT emphasises the diversity of designer interventions in the image and object domains. Faithful to the origins of the Saint-Etienne International Design Biennial, ARTIFACT is an exhibition of the free expression of designers, presented in the form of a curiosity room in which the links between creations bring out common signs, forms, materials and colours.
