The ugly, the ungainly disturb, destabilise, put us ill at ease. The beautiful - insofar as it meets our social codes for what is harmonious, pleasant, attractive - stands on its own, smooth, static and accomplished. On the other hand, the ungainly, the maladjusted, the lopsided, the deformed arouse ambiguous emotions, demand a gesture of appropriation to be transposed and transcended. We are both intrigued and repulsed, fascinated and frightened, offended and reassured by ugliness. Between beauty and ugliness lies the bizarre. Perhaps the bizarre, which is difficult to describe or quantify, can "transpose ugliness into beauty" as Baudelaire suggests.
